Theresa

2004
Theresa is a book in the form of a game. It was written according to the size and format of book pages, confined by the grid structure of a puzzle. Its narrative is the sequence of a routine evening in a lady’s life. She recalls a rule for every action she performs, using the structure of language to get a grip on the order in the world around her. Theresa is inspired by the figure of Kaspar Hauser, who was deprived of language for 17 years in his youth but later on re-adapted to the world by gaining access to language once again. His name became a metaphor for the despair of being disconnected from the ‘outside world’ and for language as a dubious remedy to this isolation.
